Godzilla Tribute

Description

This was the huge project I was working all this week. You never would have guessed what I was conjuring up these last few days.

I guess none of you ever would have imagined I was a Godzilla fan. You're right; before not too long ago I wasn't. But then one of my all time favorite internet idols did a 'Godzillathon' reviewing all the Godzilla movies created. James Rolfe (More commonly known as 'The Angry Video Game Nerd';) did a tribute last year to the Big G himseldf and reviewed Godzilla movies like he did with many other movies.

Did he get all AVGN on them or give them specific ratings? Not this time around he was more or less giving a history lesson on the films. But it was told in such a unique fashion that it soon had me watching these things repeatedly. James is a unique internet personality since he's not always stuck in his AVGN role; but also tinkers in directing and documentaries.

This is a tribute to some of the unique monsters that appeared in Godzilla films. I actually watched a few of these starring the monster: They're not cinematic masterpieces but a good way to kill an afternoon and watch total carnage/idiocy on the TV screen.

For this tribute I will list the monsters from left to right in descending order. And I will also provide links to James' Godzillathon videos for those who are interested and what possessed me to draw this.

Let's Begin:

GODZILLA - The Big G himself. Who here hasn't heard of him? Yeah I made him a little squatier this time around like the rest of the characters. Kinda like a cross between chibi and the real thing. Still has that menacing scowl though. In Japan he's known as 'Gojira'; and according to the video he was a cross between a 'Gorilla and a whale.' Alot of fans here doubt that though as seen here in the comments:
Godzillathon #1

MECHAGODZILLA - The first row of this pic is dedicated to three variations of Godzilla I find note-worthy. Among the most noteworthy adaptations is MechaGodzilla who's been three models: the original, Gardua and Kiryu. James reviewed all the MechaGodzilla ones; and the one I am showing features a Japanese actor muttering something that James just had to play again to see if he heard him right. (Be warned: foul language ahead.):
Godzillathon #27

SPACEGODZILLA - The third form of Godzilla here comes in as SpaceGodzilla. While the name sounds rather silly; the menacing crystal look of SpaceGodzilla actually is a favorite design of mine. Alot of people complained how fat he was: but that's only because of all the energy he has stored within him. Godzilla's son also makes his appearance here; in perhaps the cutest version of godzilla Jr. yet. X-3
Godzillathon #21

(Next Row- Features the Three monsters who appeared as both villains and guardians.)

BARAGON - This dog/dragon thing first appeared in a 'Frankenstein' movie I'm not kidding. Then he finally gets a big part in the next Godzillathon movie I'm showing you with the longest title yet. But poor Baragon's name is nowhere in the title: Godzilla, Mothra and Ghidorah hog the spotlight. Baragon has the worst agent ever for a giant monster.:
Godzillathon #26

MOTHRA - Queen of Kaiju; she's probably one of the few monsters who is actually kind of good. Other than the fact that she's a huge benevolent moth, she also has two twin fairies around who summon her when needed. As James put it "May sound wierd, but that's only because it is." I like that line. I'll use it anytime someone questions my fan chars backstory or my web comics. I had to put the two fairies in the pic aswell underneath Mothra.
Godzillathon #4

KING GIDORAH - Perhaps Godzilla's most famous adversary is the three-headed gold dragon King Ghidorah. Earlier he was referred to as Ghidrah and I am sure there are people out there who still call him that. So powerful in fact that Godilla couldn't take him on alone in the earlier movie either. He brought along his buddy/rival Rodan to help him out. (Gotta love how the two monsters laugh at each other's expense when Mothra shoots web at them.)
Godzillathon #5

(Next Row: Godzilla's msot prehistoric/saurian rivals.)

RODAN - Rodan got his start in his own movies before co-starring with his college buddy Godzilla. (In Monster College: rodan's nickname was 'Roadie.' ;)) Once again he and Godzilla take on King Ghidorah together in the Godzilla movie 'Monster Zero.' I'm showing this one for Roadn cause he's in it; but also so you can all take a look at Godzilla's 'Victory Dance.' It is a sight to behold. (You can pick your jaw up now. Stuff like this happens in Godzilla movies a lot.)
Godzillation #6

ANGUIRUS - A giant Ankylosaurus. Yeah it seemed suitable that Godzilla's second rival (He first appeared in 'Godzilla Raids Again) should be a dinosaur more than anything. But later in the series; like Rodan he became Godzilla's side-kick. I am showing you 'Godzilla vs. Gigan' for Angurius for good reasons. One; both he and godzilla talk in this film for some reason. Also, Anguirus proves just how stupid he is in this one. XD I don't think Anguirus was ever really the smartest of Godzilla's rivals or sidekicks. Just watch.
Godzillathon #12

ZILLA - Honestly he shouldn't be on here. he's from that 1998 American Godzilla film. And yes; as bad as that film was; it's main problem was that they called it 'Godzilla.' Tohoh later decided to set it straight. For their film adaptations; they called this vers. Zilla; and claimed americans only thought it was Godzilla. Good comeback. in Zilla's case here; I'm showing both Jame's review of that 1998 movie; and 'Final Wars where godilla fries that imposter's butt to oblivion. ;)
Godillzathon #23
Godzillathon #29

(Next two rows: Monsters created by humans/aliens that battle Godzilla. My favorite one here.)

GIGAN - If you've seen the previous Godzillathons #12 and #29; you can see how Gigan is one of the damndest monster designs ever. Hooks for hands then upgraded to chainsaws. And that buzz saw on that chest. I gotta say he's a tough SOB. Now in this next Godzillathon I show you, he actually teams up with Megalon to take on Godzilla. It's like the people who summoend Megalon borrowed Gigan from someone. And yes; as much as I hate to say it; I'm sorry I didn't draw Jet Jaguar for this picture. His theme song is something to be heard to be believed.
Godzillathon #13

DESTROYAH - DESOTROYAH!!!! DESOTROYAH!!! Oh man alive, probably my favorite movies of the series and my all time favorite monster. I mean just look at him! James summed it up when he said he looks like 'The Goddamn Devil.' THAT'S one helluva monster. And on top of that he actually beats Godzilla. Plus thanks to James everyone says 'DESOTROYAH!!!" now. Just watch. This movie is seriously kick ass. I hope I did DESOTROYAH justice with my rendition of him. The detail put into him was like..oh man. XD
Godzillathon #22

MECHA KING GHIDORAH - Just like Godzilla getting a mech version of himself, his most infamour adversary Ghidorah also got a mech version. And it's pretty awesome. The mech head in the center really makes for au nique monster design. However, the plot to the movie he starred in is as confusing as heck. Though I like the idea of cute lil' monsters merging to form into one giant terrifying monster. Gotta love the scene where the JP veteran thinks Godzilla's his friend and then...BOOM!!! Godzilla doesn't get along well with people does he?
Godzillathon #18

HEDORAH - This has to be the wierdest Godzilla movie EVAR!! Firsto ff his opponent's made of pollution and he's basically a giant walking mound of crap. XD He's pretty interesting though; but the whole film is interesting simply because of it's totally warped green-peace drug induced direction it was going. I honestly think no other movie, let alone a Godzilla movie can be wierder than this one. And jsut to tip the wierd scale further; the final scene in this Godzillathon where godzilla flies backwards will also having you saying WTF? Love that DVD title 'Something you Don't see Everyday." you sure don't. XD
Godzillathon #11

OGRA - He may look liek a giant forearmed turtle; but Ogra is probably one of Godzilla's msot amorphous adversaries yet. Even more strange is that he actually attempted to swallow Godzilla whole. Wow! Interesting movie since it was made after 1998's American version. Probably Toho's way of apologizing to the fans just as Square-Enix apologized to the fans with the Final Fantasy movie previous to 'Advent Children.'
Godzillathon #24

BIOLLANTE - Yet another interesting and bizarre design. She's literally a giant plant creature with venus flytrap claws and a crocodile mouth. And like DESOTROYAH she was actually quite a match for Godzilla. This monster was created in a contest for the next Godzilla movie. But not only was the monstercreated by a regular person; so was the plot. Yeah the contest was to write the plot ot this movie too. No wonder Biollante could beat Godzilla; someoen who wasn't with Toho wanted to make their own monster just as bad ass. It's an early case of 'Fan Fiction' be translated into a film. XD
Godzillathon #17

And there you have it folks. Hope you enjoyed this little godzilla tribute as well as Jame's Rolfe take on the Godzilla films.

More tribute charts like this will be made in the future for different reasons. I didn't get all of Godzilla's opponents or allies; not even Godzilla Jr. But that's only cause I didn't want it to get out of control. I like it as it is.

Godzilla and all monsters mentioned are (c) to Toho.
